Pumice Using For Filtration
The pure pumice stone is able to be used for filtration of drinking water. The pumice doesn’t contain any elements which may be threat for human health. While the pumice is being used at two layer filter; it is usually used for primary refining because of its lightness. The other layer below, strains the small material which was not able to be caught by pumice.

PUMICE AND DRINKING WATER
The laws, in this area, are very strict.Drinking water is regulated from legislative decreesthat derive from European standards that imposesome strict qualifications.Drinking water must not contain either microorganisms, parasites or others substances, in quantity orconcentrations which could represent a potential dangerto human health.Since drinking water is utilised by all consumers givingthem no possibility to choose the water that runs fromthe tap, the law provides for various limits, trying tosatisfy each taste and requirement.Pumice for this use is selected at its origin and producedwith precise grading and purity. It is used in water treatments inorder to reduce and eliminate thesolid substances in suspension bymeans of a multi-layer filter withsand. The considerable difference between the specific gravityof the two materials causes a rapid separation ofthe layers, producing the peak filtering efficiency ofthis system even after energetic backwashing that isoccasionally necessary to clean the filter.over other media due to its low bulk density. The water containing the pollutants is cleaned and thesuspended contaminants are retained by the filter mediaallowing the clear water to exit the filter via the under drainsystem. As the solids loading on the media increases, thefiltration process slows until it virtually stops and the filterrequires washing. This period is typically, 24 hours minimumfor a well designed plant. The filter is then isolatedand removed from service and drained. Air is introducedat the bottom of the filter bed followed by backwash wateralso in the upwards direction. The filter bed expands andthe retained solids are released and leave the filter at thetop. This backwash cycle is fully automatic and on completionthe filter is ready to return to service. The benefits of Pumice are of an operational nature. Thebackwash water rates necessary to expand the filter bedby the required 5% are much lower than for any othermedia and hence the costs of this operation are significantlyreduced. Pumice can be used to directly replacesand in the single media filters or anthracite in dual mediafilters. In each case the benefits are the same, a muchreduced backwash water cost yet no deterioration in filtratequality or volumes filtered between backwashes.Rapid Gravity Filtration using PumiceThe treatment of water for potable applications is carriedout in a treatment plant that removes the pollutantsbe they of a suspended or colloidal nature. The processes used depend upon the nature of thecontaminants experienced but includes a filtrationstage that removes the finest of suspended matterleaving the filtrate clear and meeting the variousquality standards that apply to potable water. This filtration stage is generallythe last ofthe treatmentstages, otherthan chlorination, and involvespassing thewater through abed of filtermedia, typically1m deep. Thisfiltration processis generallydown flowwhere the dirtywater enters thefilter at the topand passesd o w n w a r d sthrough themedia bed. (There are filtration processes that act inthe reverse direction but they are far less common).Where the dirty water passes down through the filterunder gravity then the filtration process is called"Gravity Filtration" and the filter a "Rapid GravityFilter".(RGF) Other down flow filter systems are the"Slow Sand Filter" and the "Pressure Filter".Theyeach operate in thesame basic mannerexcept that the pressurefilter operates undera pressure higher thanatmospheric, generatedby a pump or by ahigh static head. Theslow sand filters operate under gravity, at a very lowrate and rely on the removal of the top layer of mediafor filter cleaning. This design is not common.Rapidgravity and pressure filters contain a filtration mediathat can comprise one or more components.Pumice is a filtration media used in both of the commonlyused filter designs and offers significant advantages
